The more info you can provide the better. Tractor model? Engine make? Is this the original engine and key switch? Did this just begin to happen? Did you buy it like that? Did you change anything prior? Etc. Etc. Etc.

Internet diagnosis is completely dependent upon ALL of the info you provide so the more information you can give, the faster a correct solution can be found.

:text-welcomeconfetti: from not too far away!  As mentioned above, more info will help us help you.  The first thing that comes to mind is a wrong ignition switch or a bad one.  A volt meter will surely help figure this out too.

As Kevin and John have said we need a little more information. Don't go out and throw parts at the problem until we help you narrow it down. Electrical wiring systems have changed a lot over the years so the more you can tell us the easier it will be to get you back in the seat.

Please tell us a little about yourself and your :wh: by doing an introduction. https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/forum/47-introductions/?do=add

See if the lights will work with the ignition switch in the RUN position but with the engine not running.

This light circuit also powers the seat switch and seat relay which allows the ignition to work.

Be careful checking this out. Do not allow any power into the ignition circuit as that will burn up the ignition coil. This ignition is self-powered and the single ignition wire is grounded to shut the engine off.

I suspect your ignition switch is not powering the light circuit when the key is in the RUN position. Try the lights with the engine not running and the key in the RUN position. They should come on.

or

Have the lights on when you are starting and see if the they go out when the key returns to RUN from the START position.

The reason it may run in START position is the ignition switch is powering the lights but drops the LIGHTS in RUN. The battery terminal on the switch should power the lights in the RUN position.

I just got the tractor so i dont know much about it. The light have been removed before i got it. The ignition switch doesn't work every time si ive had to jump straight to the start, i only knew it had a loss of spark by watching when starter drive kicking out and it quiting and firing back up by jumping starter quick before it died completely. Now ive got some ideas to track down i can start from there. Thanks for the info ill let you know how i turns out

Let me know how it goes.  I have a pretty decent handle on getting most of these going and wouldn’t mind helping out a neighbor.

depending on age an if electricity was too much changed - my oracle told me

check your seatswitch first, if it have one that it is ok,

follow the wires, they will direct you to Killrelais.

When you have a battery powered Ignition, it could be it doesn‘t charge, so once the battery is too empty, no ignition.

There are lots of variables what can be the reason for your troubles.

if Seatswitch was deactivated ( cutted off) or the Keyswitch have be changed

Check the „ M“ line on the ignition switch,

that will switched on shut off position to ground

and in run it’s be floated.

or Killrelais the floating, that causes after loosening ground wire ......

lot‘s of things can happen, depending on Engine, on electricity, on several other things.

Btw:

few picts tell‘s more than 1000 lines of Text. So we can direct you where to look and what to check.

aaand we love Pictures 👍

Just a thought if the previous owner put a new switch in it thinking it was just a plug and play fix.  it's possible the switch is the wrong one . The back of the switch might have the same terminals in the same spot as an original but they dont match up to the original wire harness.  That's just going on speculation that you bought it with this issue to begin with.

that's quite a jump !  why not correct the starting issue first , and gain some confidence and satisfaction from  that ?  with a total tear down ,you are a long way out from enjoying your horse, only my opinion , pete
