JoeM 8,429 #1 Posted November 27, 2020 Did the old Pete trick, (except I didn't use Lucas), lubing a sealed bearing. I was mowing and could hear a raspy noise when the i turned off the mower deck on my 522xi worker. I had in the past re-lubricated other xi clutch bearings and they lasted very well. I would say, I opened both inboard and outboard bearings and both we in need of lubrication. Not bad for a 1998 machine. The one bearing is a normal size the other is special and pretty costly.
peter lena 9,309 #2 Posted November 28, 2020 JOEM, liked your bearing repack, I wish you had used the hi temp Lucas grease , your that red color grease is for tougher applications , but I don't know if it has the Lucas rating for 550 + degrees . anyway that's what I have done on all my mower decks as well as the pto mule drive. they all use the 6203 ( 3/4 ) bearing. since using that grease I have no noise or rough drive areas , its just amazingly solid and smooth . as others can see , you are right there to be able to improve and insure your bearing life , that's why I do it , thank you for the pictures , imagine changing a grease to prevent a failure , good job , pete
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,522 #3 Posted November 28, 2020 Bearings will overheat if they are completely full of grease. That is why they look as through they do not have enough. It was done intentionally. Found this explanation Too much grease builds pressure, pushing the rolling elements through the fluid film and against the outer race. The bearing now has to work much harder to push the rolling elements through a mud bog of grease. The increased friction and pressure from too much grease raises the temperature inside the bearing. JoeM 8,429 #4 Posted November 28, 2020 These bearing are well below the threshold of high speed. I would not worry to much about over greasing. Although, it is hard not to over grease in the world of more is better!
