IthacaJeff 151 #1 Posted November 14, 2020 (edited) Long story short. . .Starter went out on my Kohler K341. Went with DB Electrical replacement for $50 rather than $240 OEM. The old and new starters are below, and look different. Should there be a problems here? Link for the DB Electrical site, which does list the right part number. https://www.dbelectrical.com/products/starter-for-kohler-k241-k301-k341-john-deere-lawn-tractor-loader-sab0043.html?mrkgadid=3249661186&mrkgcl=1145&mrkgen=mpla&mrkgbflag=0&mrkgcat=&acctid=21700000001643279&dskeywordid=92700046659013148&lid=92700046659013148&ds_s_kwgid=58700005278934876&ds_s_inventory_feed_id=97700000007195091&dsproductgroupid=4585444524550302&product_id=SAB0043&merchid=55236&prodctry=US&prodlang=EN&channel=Online&storeid={product_store_id}&device=c&network=o&matchtype=e&locationid=&creative=&targetid=pla-4585444524550302&campaignid=305114987&adgroupid=1309518406447421&gclid=8b437771ea5e1f14212828de18802b4c&gclsrc=3p.ds&msclkid=8b437771ea5e1f14212828de18802b4c&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Shopping - Category&utm_term=4585444524550302&utm_content=Starters DSC_0249.NEF Edited November 14, 2020 by IthacaJeff
pfrederi 18,558 #2 Posted November 14, 2020 On your old one the bendix is fully extended. if you screwed it back down they would look more alike. count teeth on the bendix if they are the same new one should fit.
IthacaJeff 151 #3 Posted November 14, 2020 (edited) The teeth number are the same, on the old one the gears are extended and won't sit back down. However, when I extend the gear ring on the new one, the whole device becomes longer than the old one. Shoulda taken a picture of that. pfrederi 18,558 #4 Posted November 14, 2020 (edited) Are you sure about the part number of the starter on there now. Kohler use a bunch of different units over the years. You are going to need you r spec number to get to the Variant ## Edited November 14, 2020 by pfrederi
IthacaJeff 151 #5 Posted November 14, 2020 OP here. Well, I went ahead and put it in anyway. Only takes a couple of minutes. Works fine. Finally got around to taking off the tiller and putting on the snow blade. Stupid tractor is 35 years old, probably at least 2500 hours, and just keeps on keepin' on. Not sure the wisdom in relying on the tractor for my entire snow clearing apparatus, but it is what it is.
