Magnet Clip Asm Installation, Part 95-7683

I have a new magnet clip for my Classic GT, model 73450 that I need help installing.  The TORO part number is 95-7683.   This clip needs to be installed on the gear shift rod.   The original clip broke where it attaches to the shift rod.  It will work if i simply use electric tape to hold in place.  Eventually the tape slips and the contact can not be made.  This usually happens away from the house. 

My problem, there are two pins on the shift rod, for the cutouts on the body of magnetic clip to snap into for security, I can't get to seat.  The cutouts on the original clip are severely damaged and will not hold without the tape.  I am concerned that if I try to force the clip to snap onto the  gear shift rod, the assembly will be damaged.

 

Do I need to remove the gear shift rod assembly?   Trying to get some leverage while the shift rod is attached to the gear box is difficult if not impossible.  I removed the seat and the real fender but still access is limited.

Suspect not many of us have any experience with this item. Recall it being a problem in the past.

#8 is what you are installing

#10 is a shield for the magnet

#30 is the dog-point set screw that holds the shifter in the transmission.

#5 are the two pins that locate the magnet bracket. Would the bracket install if the 2 pins were removed first? The pins may damage a new boot.

 

Shifter is easy to remove. Place in neutral before removing and then it is ready to be reinstalled. Screw only needs about 3-4 complete turns to release the shifter.

Good time to replace the shifter boot #4 before going through all this. I would remove the cotter pin also so the boot is not damaged as it slides over it.

Garry just for my information what purpose does this magnet serve have no experience with this part ?

I believe it was 1999 the NMIR system was made mandatory. No Mow In Reverse.

The magnet activates what I will guess is a reed switch when the shifter is in the reverse position to control the NMIR module. There are also other switches in this system. If all the ducks are lined up the system shuts off the electric pto clutch.

Adding - Some models the NMIR shuts the engine off when the pto is on and the tractor is shifted to reverse.

 

I did something similar years ago using a security door and window switch that is hard wired. Mine controls a relay off the light circuit so a back-up light works only when the lights are on. The light is powered by the tractor battery which decreases the load through the light switch.

Has not given me a minutes trouble in about 10 years. Plowing snow in the dark is what prompted me to do it.

Garry, Thanks for the information.   I think removing the shifter rod will be necessary.  If I have the shift rod on a work bench, it shouldn’t be too difficult to remove the two tension pins which now are preventing the clip assembly from being attached.  It should be a simple task to remove the pins, hold the assembly in place and reinstalled the tension pins.  I will probably  wrap some tape around the assembly for extra security.

 

I may wait for most yards jobs requiring the tractor to be completed.  Typically, any job takes me longer than anyone else on earth.  Currently I am still moving the lawns and cleaning up fallen leaves using the Classic GT Tractor and a powered vacuum.

 

FYI,   this is my experience or understanding on the operation of the magnetic clip assembly.  The clip assembly contains a magnet, encased in plastic.

When the shift lever rod is moved to the transmission neutral position, the encased magnet on the rod magnetically closes an electric switch, just under the front of the seat.  I would say the completed circuit, is similar to a neutral starter switch on a manual car transmission.   With the magnetically energized switch closed, the ignition (Key) switch is energized and the engine will turn over and start.

In addition, if I was to have the brake on, engine running, and moved the shift lever from neutral into gear, the engine will stall.   It doesn’t matter forward or reverse.

The engine should not start unless the operator is in the seat, gear shift is in neutral and the pto is off.

 

The engine should stop if you leave the seat with the pto engaged, you leave the seat without the transmission being in neutral and the parking brake is applied with the transmission not in neutral. Release the parking brake first and then shifting to a gear it should stay running.

 

This is all before the NMIR gets applied or over-ridden.

 

Do you have the tractor operator manual?

Yes, I have the owner's manual.   I am the original owner.   

 

I have had the seat switch bypassed for some time. I find it inconvenient when moving from one fenced area to another.   So, I can leave the engine  running when opening a gate to drive through.   The engine will not start if the transmission is not in neutral, it will stop if the gear shift is moved from neutral or the PTO is turned on and an occupant is NOT on the seat. 

 

Just for a learning, I plan to see if the neutral  starter switch can be energized with a magnetic in close proximity.    This would be helpful if the magnet assembly ( 95-76830 )  brakes, falls  to the ground and is lost.   This has happened before and I had to tow the tractor back to the barn.    Fortunately I later located the broken part and have it taped to the shift rod. 

 

Also,  I think it may be worthwhile to try and remove one of the tension pins with pliers after spraying with WD40.   But I don't want to drop the pin and lose it.
