Good afternoon gents. Happy Veterans Day to all the vets out there. So this 308 is turning into a nightmare I replaced the oil seal and it’s still leaking. How do you tell if properly seated? What’s best way to remove without damaging seal. Next issue i as I was attempting to check for leaks at seal it was turning over and than all of a sudden stopped. Battery is strong, I have 12v on top stud of the starter solenoid but nothing at starter. The bottom one has nothing on that goes to starter.I checked continuity between both and have nothing. What I’m assuming is when you turn the key the bottom stud is supposed to get hot? I’m assuming that solenoid is shot. Just wanted to pic everyone’s brain. Thanks.

There is a wire from the ignition switch that feeds power to the small terminal on the side of your solenoid. It passes through the PTO safety switch (PTO must be off) and also goes through the clutch switch (clutch must be down). Depending on the year there may also be a start relay that connects to the "Low Oil" switch.

To test the solenoid be sure the tractor is out of gear, take a small jumper wire from the battery "+" terminal to the small terminal on the side of the solenoid. This should close the solenoid (you will hear a click) and the starter should turn over if the cables are all clean and tight.

The PTO switch has tripped me up a couple of times.  I'm now in the habit of pulling the PTO lever back as part of my starting sequence.
