71_Bronco 1,072 #1 Posted November 6, 2020 Doing a transplant in my Commando 8 finally. The stock motor has the starter/generator, and the 3-groove pulley on the output shaft. Replacement motor has a recoil starter and the same size / length output shaft. Replacement motor came off a leaf-blower. 2 questions: - Should I pull the flywheel on both and ensure the electronics under are the same? Or should they be the same and no reason to pull the flywheel? - I forgot to take a measurement of where the triple pulley sits on the output shaft. I took a picture, but no measurement. How critical is this, or should I just eye-ball it and that should be okay? Thanks!

I would assume your original commando engine was battery ignition. also assume you are planning on rope starting new engine. ( if you are moving the S/G over there are several things you will need to do) Rope start replacement must be magneto.. No need to go under Flywheel but you will have to rewire a kill switch to stop the rope start, simple toggle on off will work. Use a long straight edge to align the drive pulley with the transaxle pulley
oliver2-44 10,712 #3 Posted November 6, 2020 If you don't have a long straight edge, you can use a piece of thin string like monofilament fishing line.
71_Bronco 1,072 #4 Posted November 6, 2020 (edited) I apologize for not clarifying. I'd like to transfer over the starter / generator onto the recoil-start engine, so it will function the same as the original. If needed, I have no problem swapping the bearing plate, electronics, and flywheel. Just need to know ahead of time so I can actually do that. Wasn't sure if the components under the flywheel would be the same between the 2 engines or not. Edit: I don't know if I have a long straight-edge on hand, but can easily get a piece of angle iron from work that's long enough. WHNJ701 4,165 #5 Posted November 6, 2020 (edited) I maybe interested in that old bearing plate, mag/coil, flywheel, and pull start if you do the swap! Edited November 6, 2020 by jabelman

Consider it yours if I need to pull the parts off to complete the swap. If you need anything else, let me know. The old motor threw a rod, so ill have some other spare parts, carb, head, etc.

The pull start flywheel has magnets for the magneto and may not have the mounting holes for the S/G pulley. If the Magneto Ignition works well and the S/G pulley will bolt up you are in good shape. If you need to change flywheels then you will also want to change over to battery ignition.
71_Bronco 1,072 #9 Posted November 14, 2020 Got a chance to work on this project. Got the engine out of the leaf blower, recoil starter and tins off, and pulled the flywheel. Here's whats underneath. Will be working on the WH K181 next to see what I need to convert over.
