IthacaJeff 151 #1 Posted October 31, 2020 Hi Folks; Interesting problem developed over the past two weeks. Starter cranks once strongly, then stops. Turn key again, same thing. New battery--same result. Jump start -- same result. Today kept trying it with the new battery, and then the starter started to smoke, very acrid. Note that a couple of years ago I believe some teeth sheared off the starter or flywheel when the starter was engaged with the engine running. But, it still worked. Don't know if that has anything to do with it. Anyway, I need to get the tiller off and the plow blade on. Snow is coming, and 150' of driveway won't clear itself! Thoughts? pfrederi 18,558 #2 Posted October 31, 2020 Given your 2 listed tractor you could have any of 4 starter motors K series Vs Magnums on the 310 and Kohler vs Onan on the
IthacaJeff 151 #3 Posted October 31, 2020 Oh yeah that was dumb. It is a K341 in the 416-8. Anyone know how hard a replacement job is? Looks simple but I’ve said that before!
JohnD 145 #5 Posted November 1, 2020 Sounds like bad brushes if it is letting the smoke out. The manual makes the brush replacement look pretty easy for a KT-17, but I've never replaced them yet.
IthacaJeff 151 #6 Posted November 2, 2020 Have indeed checked connections and battery. Seems that an aftermarket (i.e., cheap) starter is in order. It may be the brushes, but there comes a time when replacing is a better option than fixing. Online from ECCPP (whoever that is) is $45. OEM is about $240. We'll try the aftermarket. . .
