M16 Balance gear removal

Recommended Posts

Bill D

I have an M16 with what I believe is a balance gear rattle.  Can I remove the balance gears and have it run without excessive vibration?  I know this is doable on the K series, but have seen mixed opinions on doing this on the M series.  Thanks.

The only differences between an M-16 and K-341 Ignition system, engine shroud and exhaust elbow.

I really didn't notice any increase in vibration in the K341 on my C165.  That engine has a shaker plate engine mount so I couldn't tell beyond the norm from that.  The gears were pulled based upon the recommendation of many people here who've made the same move on their engines.  It is worth a look at them to inspect how they are.  I've seen those gears let loose and take out a perfectly running engine.

I took my balance gears out of the last two motors I had appart and really can't notice a whole lot of difference. Take them out and leave them out!:teasing-poke:

Were those K series or M series engines?  I keep seeing articles about, mainly on the Brian Miller website, that says they can't be removed on an M series engine.

They were both k motors . I've been inside of both K and M series and they are almost identical. The crankshaft is already balanced so taking out the isn't taking much of that away. There might be just a little more vibration but it's nothing overpowering. My opinion it's vibration therapy!:happy-jumpeveryone:

Are they concern bout the Mahle Pistons???    Interesting the part number for eh balance gears themselves are eh same between K 341 and Magnum 16....

Yes Prfrederi I believe the concern is the Mahle piston in the m16 and the way it’s balanced.

However, I remove them on all my rebuilds anyway. Unless the customer wants the balance gears back in on the m16 only. If so, I press new bearings into the gears, mic the pins and gauge the play with feeler gauge.
Even after all that, I won’t guarantee the engine with them installed.
All my personally owned k and m engines the balance gears have been removed with no issues.
