Bull 34 #1 Posted October 24, 2020 Hello, I saw a 257-H with low miles and was wondering if they were good for other things besides lawn mowing. I want to have something that I can use to move firewood with an attached cart and also be able to mount a blade on front for some small clearing work. I have some hilly property so it needs to be able to get up them. I see that the model was only around for 1 year and was also wondering how hard it is to obtain parts. If you think I am heading in the wrong direction let me know of some decent models that would help me out. Regards, Bull
wh500special 2,256 #2 Posted October 24, 2020 The 250-series tractors are really nice machines. The pressure lube Kawasaki engines are very good power plants, 17 hp in the case of the 257. But they were really intended primarily as mowing and light snow removal machines. They have plenty of power and tractive force for hills, but if you’re looking to frequently move a heavy cart on those hills the Eaton 7 transmission might protest a bit. I really like the 250’s, but they have their quirks. They are slower (top speed) than probably any other Wheel Horse. Maybe as a way of increasing torque and preserving the hydro. Also, good luck changing the drive belt to the transmission. The engine crankshaft is vertical and the trans input is horizontal, so the belt goes on quite the odyssey to get there. I’m sure the tractor will work for you and I’m not suggesting you just dismiss it out of hand, but there are better suited tractors to your proposed duties in the WH family. steve
DennisThornton 4,771 #3 Posted October 24, 2020 They are GREAT riding mowers! Love the motion control! Previous owner blew lots of snow with this one but I've not. I wouldn't expect them to do what the classic series does but don't underestimate them! Very heavy duty for a riding lawnmower! Seriously, I don't think they get their due respect.
