856 Not Charging

Recommended Posts

JustinW.73

Just got done breaking in the rebuilt engine on my restored 856. Everything works great and it runs great except it doesn’t charge. It has a new vr. I’ve tried polarizing the gen but didn’t work. Sometimes the light will go off but I’m only reading about 12 volts at battery and at sg at wot.

I have 0 experience with the starter/generator.

When the starter is powered this action polarizes it so not necessary to do it.

This older Kohler service manual has a good section on the starter/generator.

You just rebuilt an engine on a restored tractor. Make sure you have good grounds. You may have paint somewhere creating a bad ground.

:text-yeahthat:            As Mike said, paint is not known to be a good conductor of electricity.

With the engine running take a small jumper wire and ground the "F" terminal of the S/G unit. The engine should labor a bit and voltage should go up to around 16 or 17.

JUSTIN, I agree with squonk on the possible grounding issue , used 4/6 ga cable wire from engine base to battery ground in consul , for all my grounding points, no more issues , pete

I know if it not a ground as the ground wire goes from the battery to the gen mount. Plus I’d think if the S.G. wasn’t grounding then it wouldn’t start correct?

what exactly will happen when grounding the F terminal?

Take a look at this old post,

@Save Old Iron covers this in the fourth posting.

I did that and it went above 13 volts and kept rising (around 1/4 or less throttle). I’m starting to think regulator is bad or maybe needs adjusting?

Got it figured out. Had to adjust the f relay contacts. Charges at 13.5 volts full throttle. Thanks guys.
