D series fuel system issues

Recommended Posts

So I decided to redo my first attempt at rigging the fuel system on my 1976 d-160. I had to many loops I thought. Plus it looks like next year I need to do a serious cleaning and possibly coat the inside of the tank. I found rust chunks in the fuel shut off I added. Its a good thing i added a good fuel filter. Anyways how many other have d series fuel issues. And if so what are some ideas i could do to modify if I have to ? I want to stay original as possible but I keep having to prime the pump everyone once in a while. Now saying all this I did rebuild the carb and the factory pump and the carb works really good. Here is some photos of before and after and a video i shot yesterday. I am up for whatever suggestions anyone has. maybe i need to just button the fuel line up clos to the top of the frame? if so there is no other fuel line clamps just the one by the tank. I do think the new setup is better. I used pipe fittings a shut off a check valve and then inline filter. The first 3 photos are the old setup. (photos if folks have some suggestions) Let me know your opinions!

One other question When checking the rear end oil. Should i do it while running and warm? or cold and not running? I changed the rear oil and filter but it seemed to be low yesterday but it has sat for a while.

I dont think I've got any thing to offer except my own experience/observations with my Onan..... First off - as you have no doubt heard - those Onans are FINIKY!! that carb especially!  OK back to your fuel hose routing, it looks exactly like I run mine, but I did go ahead and spring for a new pump - theyre not too pricy on the bay. As a side note, I tried an electric pump and even with the lowest pressure one, the needle/seat in carb wouldnt hold it and the carb would flood. I also replaced the points/condenser/coil and wires, and of course plugs. I must have went thru that carb half a dozen times:wacko:

Bottom line is .... after MANY frustrating hrs of tinkering with that thing, it runs absolutely fantastic!! When that Onan is set right they are AWSOME! I pull the choke and hit the key and it'll start immediately and I quickly close the choke. With the colder weather coming on I'm noticing I may have to give it a quick pull on the choke to let it smooth out.

You have peaked my interest. I didn't realize they sold this pump still? I went threw my carb but I never replaced the points. Would you happen to know a part number for the pump? It is crazy once she is running she purrs. runs real good.

Dont know the # but I think it fits many sizes of the Onan - mine is a B43-some letter - yours shud be too. Just go to the bay and put your model Onan # in search for what ever youre needing points are there too.

Theres several here on this page in different price ranges.....
