K91 Fires / Won't fire

Recommended Posts

jsp_333

Have a k91 on an rj and it either fires on the first pull or won't fire at all.  Even with quick start.

Have a brand new, correct, plug.  Have confirmed there is spark even when it won't fire.

Have gas moving through fuel line and bowl on carb has fuel.

Carb has been rebuilt.  Swapped out  main fuel needle on Saturday and it fired so figured I was really smart and fixed it. Denied.

Wondering about fuel inlet needle now except (see pics) I've got a wet plug and it even looks like fuel is seeping out exhaust port.

Also some times the engine runs smoothly other times missing and back firing.  That will be another topic next week.

I've done everything I can think of so now I'm reaching out to the experts for help.

Cheers, John

Have you replaced the ignition points and condenser? The points also set you ignition timing so it is very important that they are set properly.

Before, during or after the problem surfaced?

Did you check the float for a leak?  Did you check if the inlet needle and seat shuts off the flow properly?

Have not replaced the points and condenser. they are original to the engine.  hmmmm

Have not changed the fly wheel key.

Carb was rebuilt before I even tried to fire the engine.

However I had one issue in the past where the float did not operate properly and fuel continued to flow to the point it was coming out everywhere. Carb / Air Filter / exhaust

Drained the oil after that happened.

I'm wondering about a brand new carb at this point.  Points would be cheaper though.

I'll sleep on it.

BTW Engine fired right up yesterday. Second pull.  And so it goes.

Have ordered a new carb and points and condensor from isavetractors.

In two weeks we'll know.  I'll check fly wheel key while I'm waiting.

Update;  Carb and points arrived.  Installed yesterday.

Engine running smoothly, much better than it did with the old carb. It passed the ultimate test today - fired while I was sitting in the seat.

Also found a post about 5 things to do to newly purchased old engines. For the guys like me that aren't quite engine proficient.
