Bottom Belt Guard #113855 On a 1991 312-8 ?

Recommended Posts

Lefty 57

Hi there fellow Wheel Horse owners. I am in the process of restoring a 1991 model 312-8. Whilst I have been working my way around the tractor fixing various things I have removed both of the footplates, Belt guard panel and Lift lever panel to give them a de-rust/re-paint and have been cleaning everything up whilst the panels are off.

I keep seeing Belt guards/guides for sale on Ebay for the 312-8 models, like those pictured below. I have looked at parts lists and on some it shows two of these type of brackets. The bottom belt guard or guide is part number #113855.

Where are they located/mounted on the 91 model 312-8? Or are they only fitted on earlier models?

On my 312-8 the only guides/guards I can see that look something like the ones pictured are right near the PTO at the top and bottom of the clutch plate housing. Is this the location of these guides?

The drive belt runs around the main transmission pulley, PTO and the idler pulley. The only other guard/guide for the drive belt is a metal bracket bolted on underneath the footrest. I know that the belt guard panel itself acts as a guide and needs to be bolted in place for the clutch engagement to work correctly.

Am I missing some parts? If anyone can show where these guides should be it would be a great help. This is my first Wheel Horse so I maybe wrong in thinking parts are missing. I just want to make sure before bolting the panels back in place.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice,

Lefty 57

Many only have access to online parts lists and those like the original manuals are shared by similar models. These do not identify what model uses what.

If you go to the original manuals they do identify what model uses what.

Here is an original parts manual for your tractor and will add the page involved with this thread.

The 416 in this manual is a twin cylinder Onan engine.

The 111242 is still available from Toro.

The 113855 is no longer available.

I looked to see if one replaced the other but no evidence of that.

LEFTY 57 , that lower belt guide is there to control belt play , when you step on the clutch pedal. there is probably a picture on site for belt mounting issues . can't find a picture  , but they are very basic and simple in their  function , they are bolted on and held in place with the mounting hole . I think that you re  overthinking the set up . while you are in the area , why not grease the needle bearing on the pto drive ?, disconnect the outer swing arm , that holds pressure against it , and just pull it off, wipe it out and replace fresh grease , only use HI TEMP grease , do not over grease it . let us know pete

The belt guide in your picture gets mounted to the engine block below the PTO, using the U-shaped end.  (May have to use some washers to space it so that it lines up with the belt.)   I have found that the L-shaped end gets adjusted about a 1/4 inch above the bottom of the belt guard to help the belt to disengage when you're not in gear.    I just went through the same confusion with the belt guide on my C-85, and found that that is what works.   Someone else correct me if I'm wrong.

The guide is below the engine pulley to hold the bottom of the belt up when it is loose. You may already have one but it is hiding.

Don't know why the export models would use a different guide but here is where the 115835 was used. Probably the very same part.

Adding
Don't see a 1991 export model but 1992 show a 111242 guide.

Thank you to everybody who has replied to my query about the drive belt guides. It is really appreciated.

I have checked over my 312-8 and can see the ends of the belt guides hiding behind the top and bottom of the PTO clutch plate.

I will definitely be re-greasing the needle bearing in the PTO as mentioned by (Peter Lena).

One question do I need to remove the "Circlips" from the end of the PTO shaft in order to get to the needle bearing? Or does the PTO drive just slide of the shaft once the outer swing arm is disconnected?

lefty 57, you might have to remove the L  shaped slow down pad holding close to the outside upper  area on  the cone pulley area, once you do that , the entire cone should just slide off . just unhook the clip to the outer trunnion bearing area  , and the arm swings out of the way. pete,
