Leaks /seeps???  Also check your oil.... if the fuel pump is failing some of your gas is going into the crankcase....Gas with Ethanol in it has a  lower BTU (energy) content.  You burn more of it to do the same work.

I was wondering about ethanol; maybe that's it.

10% ethanol should only reduce fuel consumption a few percentage points, make sure that you aren't using a higher percentage.  There are several stations in my area that have the 15% ethanol scam going on and there is no engine made that should use it.  Of course 0% is the best.

Is the power normal?  Perhaps the compression is low from worn valves or rings.  If the valves are an issue you should make repairs now rather than causing more damage to the valves or valve seats.

Power seems fine.  What should compression be?

You may have an automatic compression release engine making a compression test more difficult.  You can try spinning the engine backwards to test, increase valve clearance to where the ACR doesn't open the valve or do a leakdown test to see if there is much air leakage.  Compression pressure should be in the neighborhood of 100 PSI.

check spark plug and air filter

check the tire pressure ; more psi = less rolling resistance

With all the rain we have had this summer the grass is taller and thicker. Might be that you are just working it harder this year. I have already burnt around 60 gallons mowing, little gardening, hauling limbs  out of the yard.
