Bostman67 54 #1 Posted October 2, 2020 (edited) I'm going to check out a 1277 Wheel Horse manufactured in 1967. When it was parked inside the garage two years ago it was running great. Mice have since chewed wires. Fuel line is rotten. It comes with a mower, rototiller, chipper, york rake and snow thrower. I'm hoping my wife will let me buy it if I can show her there are resources on here that will aide in repairing it. With all attachments its under $1k. Is this a good deal? Is fixing this a moderate repair? (Wires, fuel line, tune up) Beside body rot, if any, what should I be cautious of ? I've watched a dozen Youtube videos this week on Wheel horse. Can anyone offer a book/manual that I can purchase? Edited October 3, 2020 by Bostman67 clarity in description 1
Sparky-(Admin) 22,232 #2 Posted October 2, 2020 The scariest thing about buying a non-running hydro is the inability to test out the trans. If in fact it only needs what you mentioned it’s a fair deal, not a steal but definitely fair. 3

The rest of the stuff is no problem. Parts availability is good. We're here to help with knowledge.
Pullstart 64,730 #5 Posted October 3, 2020 The 60’s tractors are very easy to re-wire, as they are the least complex of them all. So long as the trans is good, it’ll be very easy to get up and running like a top. Let us know when you get it home!
Tractorhead 9,099 #6 Posted October 3, 2020 Welcome to Looks great the price for a „ when i sat it ther it runn‘s great“ depends on. i hear that too often to believe, i don‘t want speaking bad about the owner, because i don’t know him, but sometimes over the Time hidden troubles will be forgotten. on the other side the Attachements if in good conditions have also there Value. Can it be fixed? I would say - it depends on your own skills, help is here available if you stuck with a problem, May it depends 1-2Day‘s to get the answer, but this Forum is best situated about Wheelhorses. The Attachments make it at least to a Worker. If you like to buy, i would buy it as a „Project Tractor“, be aware to give her that care that she needs. nearly everything can be fixed, worst case where a exchange of the Gearbox.

squonk 42,712 #11 Posted October 3, 2020 If that York rake has the drop down blade it's worth about $400 by itself.
Bostman67 54 #12 Posted October 3, 2020 I'm heading out to see this 1277 Wheel Horse in a couple of hours. I think I will be able to convince my wife that her garden will be ready in the Spring. I wonder if there's a sickle attachment? I think that's asking too much. I will send more pictures this afternoon. 2
Ed Kennell 40,617 #13 Posted October 3, 2020 The 12 HP 1967 tractor is one of the best designs Wheel Horse made. Simple wiring, high fuel tank, simple PTO engagement, front attach a matic make it a very easy machine to maintain. The hydro is a concern, but I have probably had 20 tractors with the Sundstrand hydros and have only had a problem with one. If the oil or ATF in the hyrdo looks clean, I would not be worried about the hydro. As stated above, there is $1000 worth of implements in the deal. The tiller.....a hydro will work, but a gear drive is better for operating a tiller as the tiller will tend to push the hydro. There is a pulley system required to attach the tiller. Make sure you get it as they are difficult to find. Check the deck spindles for noise and bearing play. The snow blower....I see the push/lift rod, but can't see the flag. Make sure you get the flag.
ebinmaine 70,910 #14 Posted October 3, 2020 That front chipper is worth $300 alone. If you buy it you'll have the whole $1000 value in implements and basically a free tractor. Like Ed says. Look at the hydro fluid. Should be red back then. It IS possible it's been retrofitted to using engine oil however. Feel free to post pics at the site if you have any questions. We'll answer fairly soon most times. Go get 'er and grab the wrenches!!
Darb1964 1,093 #15 Posted October 3, 2020 I recently got a 1067, love the tractor, first older one I have owned. Very simple to work on. Like the starter generator, the hood latch is nice and tool box comes in handy. Mine is a six speed, I think that is a reasonable deal, tread lightly and you may be able to get it for a little less, cash in hand is a game changer.

Bostman67 54 #18 Posted October 3, 2020 (edited) Thanx to you guys and ladies. It was your expertise that encouraged me to move forward on this. I also have the belts, chains for tires and some other items to attach snow thrower. my wife will have a garden in the spring no doubt. I just have to get some wires repaired, change fluids, filter, fuel line, spark plugs and get battery. I can’t wait! One problem...where do I start? Where do I get parts? I have downloaded manual (thanks). I guess I will start by reading that! Edited October 3, 2020 by Bostman67 Misspelling

Tractorhead 9,099 #21 Posted October 3, 2020 Congrats to your decisions, save this Horse. it looks it needs some Care, that means may be invest a little bit Time and Material but you get it back with a very reliable, useful and Funny piece of machinery.
ebinmaine 70,910 #22 Posted October 3, 2020 Don't be concerned about parts availability. Trina and I keep a few spares of certain things as do a lot of other Redsquare members. There's no specific best place to start but I'd do the wiring first so you can hear it run. That adds a tremendous amount of satisfaction to the journey. Then start working through the issues one by one til she's going great. Be patient and keep asking lots of questions. GREAT purchase!!!!!
