Shut-off valve installation

Recommended Posts

Well, friends, here I am again, appealing to your expertise.

After changing the fuel filter, the fuel pump wasn't exerting enough pull to get gas through the empty line and into the carburetor of my recently acquired C145. Per help from the forum, I installed an in-line primer bulb, which looks like it will work great. While I was at it, I decided to replace the fuel line and the shut-off valve at the gas tank. The old valve was a little rough, as you can see.

Well, try as I might, I can't get the replacement valve to fit into the opening in the gas tank. The hole is 1/2 inch wide, while the rubber insert on the valve is close to 5/8 inch wide. (The insert on the old valve is barely 9/16 inch wide, but it's pretty chewed up.) I put a dab of plumber's grease on the new valve's rubber insert. (Don't know if that was a good idea or not.) I warmed it up with a blow dryer to try to make the rubber more pliable. I rotated the valve as I tried to press it into the hole. No luck. In fact, I can see the rubber on the new valve kind of bunching up as I try to push it in. It just clearly seems like there's too much rubber and not enough hole. Any thoughts?

Thank you!

I put the rubber in first then push the valve in it

I used dish soap And I didn't have that mush trouble with it. The hardest thing for me was trying to get the clamp over the hose. It's really a  tight fit for the hose.

That worked perfectly! Thank you so much!

mapleguy, recently replaced that gasket on my horse , i used DIELECTRIC GREASE , it was the awkward angle of insertion that made mine tough ,  so i used the rear trans hitch pin area to wood block a piece of pipe that let me leverage that into the tank hole . that was much better than trying to push it in , pete

Umm, shouldn't the new valve have a filter on it?
