Non wheel horse engine?

I have a 5 hp briggs on a tiller and it has a coil with the built in magneto . It also came with factory points .. the wire coming from the coil goes to the points contact. ??

It's been so long since I saw an old Briggs setup - thanks! My brain tells me that two wires coming from the points cap is odd. I remember only a single lead and the other that grounded the circuit at the carb below idle. So, pull the points cap and see that one lead goes from points to coil and that the points short to the capacitor on each revolution. The other should serve as a means to ground the circuit to kill the engine. Brings back memories of the teenage years...

Just a suggestion, Ditch the points system and update to the solid state system. Never again will you have to pull the fly wheel to deal with the points. This is as simple as replacing the existing coil with a solid state one, the points can just be left where they are and not connected to anything. Note: if wish to remove the points you will need to plug the hole that the push rod comes through, this is why I just leave them where they are. Briggs part number for a solid state 5hp coil is 397358, you can also use an aftermarket equivalent to save a little $.

I agree with you but I think someone already did put in the solid state ignition coil only they didn't wire it correctly. if you look close at picture isn't that little coil on left side of big coil the solid state ignition!

It does appear that way now that you mention it. If this is the case then the terminal on the coil is for the kill wire. Ground this terminal out to shut the engine off. There should be no wires running to the points.

Ya I agree probably why they couldn't get it running it also had a sheared flywheel key probably why I got it for 10 bucks. It's actually a nice coast to coast front time tiller

The solid state ignition is the way to go, as Achto said.

 

Oddly enough, when I pulled the shroud off of the 8hp Briggs that's on my David Bradley (which I really need to do something with.. too many projects!) I found it to have a 5hp Briggs solid state coil on it. Obviously the flywheel on the 8hp is larger in diameter so only the two "edges" of the coil are able to be gapped to the flywheel, but it actually runs really good. It appears whoever did it did have to open up the mounting holes a small amount to mount it.

What engine is on your david bradley?143402 would be original with a 3 leg coil with a 2 magnet flywheel.

Non-original engine. Got the original with it, but it needs a rod.

You do not need the points with that coil. Only wire you need with that 

is a kill switch wire. It is the early type where that piece is retro-fittted to

the original coil.
