Battery charge

Recommended Posts

Michael McCarthy

Bought a B-111 from a guy who did a partial rebuild.  He sold it to me on the way out of town, so I can't ask him anything directly.  The last thing he said was that it runs off battery only.  I can't find anything that remotely looks like an alternator, and there is only a ground wire, and a hot to the starter connected to the battery.  Any ideas on how to reinstall/retrofit a generator?  That wouldn't be a starter/generator would it?

The engine is a Briggs & Stratton 252707.

Thank you,

Mike

Welcome.  Your B&S engine has an unregulated charging system.  With engine running a multimeter should show about 13.5 to 14.0 volts at the battery

Wirng diagram is here

Did he leave voluntarily or involuntary?!?!?

Seriously :WRS:

Look for wires coming out from under the engine tin(shroud) You should find one that runs the lights and one that charges the battery. A third wire may be present that grounds out the magneto for engine kill.

If you are not seeing 13.6v or more battery voltage running and If your multimeter will measure DC amps you can unplug the wires coming from the engine.  Hook the multimeter red lead to the red wire from the engine the black lead to the battery + terminal  With engine running you should see 2-3 amps.

Just put engine model number (252797) in the search box and there it was.
