Kohler engine pully problem

Recommended Posts

WH854

I got anew engine pully for my tractor today.the old one had a chunk outof it.

Part #7466 normally there would be a set screw on the keyway, and one about 90

degrees. The new one has the set screws down at the bottem away from the keyway.

The black marks are about where the set screws are located on the new one would this be a bad new pully or what.Went to the Toro dealer this morning(May 16) he told me ifyou have to buy a new engine pully for a Kohler engine with a Pto clutch

you will get the new style pully, the key is no longer held in with a set screw. They are down at the bottom below the keyway.Thats in case you are interested :omg:

 The set screes are to keep the sheave (pulley) from walking on the shaft the key keep it locked in rotation. This should work just fine. :omg:

If it was mine, I would drill and tap it above the key. Just like every pulley I have seen that was made in the last 100 years. I think they screw up and did not want to fix them. I know the key is trapped in by the PTO, I just don't think every one else has been wrong.

If that key can move at all it will eventually round out the keyways in the pulley and the crankshaft. I can show you some that have done it.

Cain,t drill ahole on top of keyway ther is a threaded hole underneath for a bolt hole to fasten the clutch plate on to the pully. 69ramrod69 has the right idea. The Toro dealer told me if you buy a new one they will all come like the one I have.So

I am using this one if it blows up, it blows up.

Interesting thread. I took the pulley off the my 16 hp Kohler from the C165 8 speed which is much smaller that the one that is for the 520H hydro. The C165 had the set screw over the key while the one from the 520H was staggered like you show. I hope I don't run into any problems. I am assuming the larger pulley is needed to run the hydro on the 520H to help with cooling??? I have to get a new belt anyway so I can put the smaller back on. I would then loose some ground speed but should be easier on the engine. What do you guys think?

I have a pully from a Model 1276,but it is smaller 3 1/2" inches across this one on

the tractor(C- 105) measures 4" inches across.The transmisson is an 8 speed.Your

520-H is a later model if that pully came with it I would leave it on.The fellow at the Toro dealer said if you buy a new pully from Toro they may all come like my new one.Has anyone on here ever had PTO completely torn down? :omg:
