Engine replacement

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys..

I had a engine that went south on me. I'm looking at another engine, however, the crankshaft is 1 inch. My existing engine was an inch and an eighth. (I have no idea if anything is possible.)

Is there any way to sleeve, or whatever the smaller crankshaft to accommodate 1 1/8" pulleys.

My initial thought was to change-out the pulleys, however I'm not sure that's possible due to the outer pto pulley that has a support attaching in the middle.

The new engine also has a tapered shaft close to the engine, where the old engine shaft is the same size, no taper.

I hope I've explained all this so it's understood where my issue lies.

Thanks in advance for any help.

As John @wallfish told you, it can be sleeved. Another consideration is the thrust bearing that Kohler installs on engines for :wh:. The PTO on your crankshaft places a great deal of inward thrust on the crankshaft. Without the thrust bearing you would need to switch (no pun intended) to an electric PTO clutch.

Is the engine that went south on you a 18 hp kohler magnum? If so, would you consider selling flywheel or engine?  Do you know what exactly is wrong with it?            I can be reached at                   sonny.ramey@yahoo.com

Sorry Sonny,

I just saw this. Yes it is a magnum, but it's going on another machine I have. The stator  is bad, but it will be backup so I'm ok with it.

I'm asking the below for placement of new engine.

Is there a specific way to align the drive belt, pulley on new engine?

Also, didn't find anything on tension of drive belt.

Thanks

Just do the straight edge method mentioned here.

I guess that you are using a spring loaded idler pulley, if so the spring sets the tension.

You can use anything that's straight as a straight edge to line them up or use the belt itself and eyeball it. Belts are a little forgiving in the tolerance for alignment and more so the further the distance between the pulleys, but having them aligned is always best. I've eyeballed alignment on some custom stuff and didn't have any issues.

Not sure exactly what you're looking for as far as "tension on the drive belt". Use a stiff spring that allows the pedal to operate with relative ease but applies enough tension to keep the belt from slipping.

Hey guys,

Every time I thought about updating this story, and expressing thanks, I was in the middle of another task. So now, I'm taking the time. I've mowed and pushed snow with my 520 with it's new motor. This Preditor is a true powerhouse.

As recommended I bought 2 used electric clutches with both being dead when I received them. I decided to work at using my manual clutch and figured it out. All's good..  Again, thanks to all that helped.
