71_Bronco 1,072 #1 Posted September 8, 2020 Have 2 sets of rear rims / tires I have being stored in my shed. Both sets are 12" wheels with old, cracked turf tires (one set is Carlisle, one set is Wheel Horse branded). Right now I have them on the shelf with the tires on the wheels. They are light (so not filled) and don't have any sloshing from water seeping in over the years (at least not enough to make noise). The question I have, is if I should remove and get rid of the tires (since I wont use them), and just store the rims? Or should I leave the tires on and deal with the tires at a later date? Thoughts? ebinmaine 72,993 #2 Posted September 8, 2020 If you KNOW you're going to keep the rims and use them later you should remove the tires now and repaint the rims ... then store them .That way no rust or corrosion can keep getting worse inside the tires.

WHNJ701 4,165 #4 Posted September 8, 2020 Any chance I can get rid of tires is opportunity I don't pass up, right now I am lucky the township charges 2 bucks for small fronts and 4 bucks for the rears and I think its 7 now for car, all must be off the rims or that's than extra 5 per tire. Actually last time I went I wound up bringing home tires from the pile!

Won’t take them curbside here... on or off rim... 36 minutes ago, 953 nut said: Cut them up with a sawzall and put the pieces in with the garbage, no added cost. I use that philosophy on all sorts of non-toxic disposables that otherwise wouldn’t be taken due to size or weight...
71_Bronco 1,072 #8 Posted September 9, 2020 The town I live in has a town-run dump (only for residents). Tires are a $5 fee, though not sure if they do a smaller fee for the lawnmower tires. However, last time I was there, disposing of a mattress, they let me put it in the pile for free. I stacked it neatly where it belongs (rather than just on the ground in the area) and I got there just before close. I think they were just happy they didn't have to go move it after I left. I was thinkkng about doing this, put on a coat of paint to keep any rust at bay.

Pullstart 67,043 #11 Posted September 9, 2020 If you paint the rims now, they will have maximum cure time before you mount tires. If you procrastinate, you’ll likely change the paint scheme by then anyways!
