leeave96 490 #1 Posted August 27, 2020 In the restorations section, I posted a Graveyard to Farmyard thread regarding my 520H. One of the Questions I asked was... ”I have two other 520H tractors. One after Toro bought them and one before with the straight front axle. The older one has a different engine sound than the later Toro 520H. Both cylinders are firing, no issues there. The later model has more of a sweet throaty sound. The older one in some ways sounds like any other garden tractor. Were there different muffler internals on the 520H models over the years of production that would account for this sound difference? This 520H I just got going is a Toro Wheelhorse, but an older model. It sounds exactly like the oldest Wheelhorse from above, the one with a straight axle. Seems to rune fine, fires off first crank. Just doesn’t have that throaty sound my later model 520H has.” Do your 520H tractors all sound the same? Thanks!
lynnmor 7,858 #2 Posted August 27, 2020 I know there are some external differences, so maybe the inside is different as well. The large brace that has the bolt holes had no large hole in the middle in the early ones is one major difference. I had a muffler that had a tink sound that I thought might be a valve seat. but I believe that it may have a baffle rusted. I have 1991 to 1997 520H's, all Toro and they all sound pretty much the same. Some day I may need to replace one with my NOS muffler that is very early. Pullstart 67,053 #3 Posted August 27, 2020 Could you swap mufflers around and test again?
leeave96 490 #4 Posted August 27, 2020 Thanks for the replies - could be my lame hearing in my older age... It’s nice to get one of these old tractors going again.
