snowhound 106 #1 Posted August 21, 2020 I have a 416-8 with a Kohler M16 that doesn't turn off. I've tried a new switch and still have the problem and was told it could be a bad ground. If I add a wire to the ground lead that goes to the switch and ground it would that correct my problem?
squonk 44,036 #2 Posted August 21, 2020 It might. Also make sure the grounding lead from the magneto isn't broken
snowhound 106 #3 Posted August 21, 2020 Thanks for the reply, electrical isn't my strong point and I wanted to be sure trying it wouldn't cause more issues. I'll check the ground lead to the magneto before adding a ground.
biged77 113 #4 Posted August 21, 2020 The 1987/88 416-8 with the M16 engine does not have a separate wire from the ignition switch G terminal to ground. I added a wire by splicing to the black wire going from the G terminal to the seat switch and routing to the battery ground where it connects to the chassis. This assures a good ground for the magneto without depending on grounding through the switch casing.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,561 #5 Posted August 21, 2020 The wire from the ignition switch to the magneto is dark blue. Somewhere between the ignition switch and the magneto another dark blue wire is connected to the switch to magneto dark blue wire. Most often this connection is made at one of the switches - 2 wires connected to one switch terminal. If the tractor is running with the pto on and you lift yourself off the seat does the engine quit? It should.
