312-8 with cranking problems

Recommended Posts

RedRover

Recent acquired 312-8 had by-passed the starter switch and installed a push button starter after the switch was turned on.  I wanted to make it original so I replaced the starter switch and removed the push button starter that was wired straight to the battery and one wire going to the relay.......Nothing happens.  Not being very mechanically minded I hope someone might be able to tell me what could be wrong.

Do you have the model number of your tractor? The wiring changed a few times on this model so need to dig up the correct wiring diagram.

Look at the old ignition switch and the new one to be sure they have the same terminal layout. This thread may help you understand what the differences are between Magneto and Battery powered ignition systems.

Also, is your PTO in the off position and have you pushed the clutch down when attempting to start the engine?

The 312's have the switch mounted in a plate attached with only two screws If it is rusty around those two screws you won't have ground to the switch. I had that problemon the 312 i bought it had set out side before I got it.

There are also a few more pieces of the hood stand that are bolted together before it gets to where the ground is bolted on. Might need to check all the joints. I also added an extra ground wire from the battery

to the engine.

:text-yeahthat:First thing you need to know is, do you have a Kohler M12, or a Kohler K301?

The ignition switch was taken from another 313-8 that was working when I decided to use it for parts because of the need for an axle seal.  Yes, I have done all the obvious preliminaries (clutch down, seat switch down and blade lever disengaged.)  I don't know if I mentioned earlier this 312-8 had been exposed to the elements when I purchased.  Somewhere along the way a push button starter had been rigged.  I was just hoping  the used switch may have been the problem.  I have since installed another known to be good used solenoid....my next step is trying to switch out the relay.    What I really need is for one of you knowledgeable persons that might live in Southern VA or Northern NC that I could hire to come on by and trouble shoot.   Prefer this approach rather than take it into a TORO shop where maybe the younger technicians have never seen a 312-8.

If you posted some numbers so we knew what you had there is likely a diagram available to show you exactly what is wrong without throwing parts at it. All that is required is a test light or voltmeter.

If there is no tractor model number and serial number available off the rear fender pan post all the numbers off the engine decal including the serial number.

There are 26 different models/years of 312-8 and many changes to the wiring in that period.
