Shed 279 #1 Posted July 26, 2020 So I have a 416 my mom bought new it has over 2000 hours on the onans it smokes some. It still runs though but lacking power but could be hydro unit too needing work. I know the tractors life and it worked. Is it worth rebuilding the onans I know they are hard to find parts for and a little tricky to rebuild. Also does anyone know rebuild parts for the mower deck? That's in good shape but all 3 spindles need to be rebuilt. Also steering is crazy loose any one ever swap in full hydro steering ever? I would love to see this tractor fully rebuilt one day. Darb1964 1,119 #2 Posted July 26, 2020 It's worth it if the sentimental value is worth it to you. I think you will have more than the overall selling value into the protect. If not in a hurry you could pick away at it, find a reputable person to rebuild the motor and tyranny. Buy a used tractor for five/six hundred dollars in good shape in the mean time.
lynnmor 7,817 #3 Posted July 26, 2020 Most parts for Onans are readily available, those that you can’t find new are available used. Mower decks use standard bearings available at numerous places. If you need additional parts, contact vendors on this site for used parts. There is no “hydro” steering. Adjust, bush, replace parts as required.

What is your thoughts on repower instead of rebuilding the onans I would attempt to make the Onan right. Pull it down and assess the situation and expense, then make a decision. Cobbling together an exhaust and modifying wiring and drive components to have a Chinese or other engine is not what I would want.

( thank you in advance )
Shed 279 #8 Posted July 26, 2020 Oil was just added I remember my mom having it picked up one day brought to the dealer and they brought it back and told her the oil filter was changed but when they replaced it they cross treaded it and I can tell you the filter has never been changed since then. The oil was just added when needed. It was just what she had bought from dollar store probably type of oil lol. Full throttle when mowing but half I'd say just driving it towed a lot of rocks Valves nope spark plugs were changed and the coil was changed Low octane

The Tuul Crib 7,339 #10 Posted July 27, 2020 Heres another thought. What would it cost to go to a big box store or even a dealer and spend big money on a new lawn tractor that may not last long. If you rebuild what you have it could last another 30 years plus.
Shed 279 #11 Posted July 27, 2020 My mom didnt go to big box store but see did go green after buying a husqvarna I'll post pictures of that and why its worth the restore of the tractor. 1 1
