Debating a Kohler k301 Rebuild

Recommended Posts

Howdy Everyone, hope you all are staying safe and doing well.

I picked up an older wheel horse with a K301 the other day for 150 bucks. after getting it home I realized that the Governor stop pin was completely loose and hanging out  of the engine, the threads are stripped out as well, So I JB welded into place, (I know... I know...) and after playing with it and driving it around the yard this thing will Run ride open. Considering the Stop pin was loose, and it runs wide open, I am assuming that the governor gear or shaft might be broken. (seems common on the k series as well)

Is there any diagnostics I can do to tell if the gear is broken or missing?

Also, I am debating on tearing this thing down and rebuilding it for fun - thoughts?

AGREE WITH WHX24, in adjusting per the manual , i would also detail a lubrication base on every related movement point , especially the internal cross shaft ends. regular penetrating oil on those two points really freed up mine , and governor follow is smooth and seamless. as far as rebuilding for the fun of it AND RELATED MACHINE SHOP WORK , if you can find a good used low hr m 12 , engine , that would be a solid gain . pete

:WRS:

If you have a good local engine machine shop with reasonable prices I would say go for it. Buying a GOOD used engine is a short term answer, rebuilding your engine is an investment that will be well worth the money.

This thread will give you some good information.
