johnnymag3 2,581 #1 Posted July 19, 2020 (edited) So I decided that if this coil does not do the trick for this quirky Magnum 12, Im going to install a low hour K 12HP engine. What and how do I deal with using the 2 different types of points / no points engine, and how do I get my battery charged with the 3 wire plug coming out of the K engine....is it the same thing other than putting 12 volts to the coil when Ignition on .Any advice, and or experience with this transplant is welcome. I never went from one to another... John Edited July 19, 2020 by johnnymag3
pfrederi 18,750 #2 Posted July 19, 2020 You will need a new ignition switch with an "I" terminal and an external (finned) voltage regulator. The small regulator on the Magnum air shroud relies on the air flow for cooling. Unless you can hack a similiar hole in the K shroud you will have to get and mount an older large regulator somewhere.
johnnymag3 2,581 #3 Posted July 19, 2020 Great I have several Ignition switches....got that covered. The "I" terminal will go to the + on coil correct? Then the 2 wires coming from the Stator will go to AC terminals on the voltage regulator, The B+ goes to the battery. thank you.................John
pfrederi 18,750 #4 Posted July 19, 2020 The third terminal on the regulator goes to the "R" terminal on the ignition switch.
peter lena 9,324 #5 Posted July 19, 2020 johnnymag3, that low hours 12 sounds sweet , i agree with above on the ignition switch , take advantage of that empty engine space and detail ground all your mounting points , added a seperate ground cable from engine/frame base to battery /dash grounding point . also detail ground the starter switch , for solid response. use dielectric grease on all connections. let us know how you are doing, pete
Bill D 2,298 #6 Posted July 19, 2020 Richmondred01 has a wiring harness for a 312-8. It might be for a K series equipped tractor. Might be worth buying as it would make the swap easier. Bill

953 nut 60,604 #8 Posted August 14, 2020 Glad you got it going. In addition to the ignition switch if you had changed the engine the safety switches would have needed some attention too.
