Help: 414-8: Ignition Key Will Not Energize

Recommended Posts

Gents, I'm going to be as clear and detailed as possible here. Thank you in advance for any help/leads/expertise.

Tractor: 1986 414-8 with 3 amp charging system. Battery ignition. Electric lift (more on that later).

Work done to it recently:

  • installed Facet electronic fuel pump;
  • installed Kirk's Engines transducer ignition, Bosch blue coil, new points, plug, ignition wire

Cleaned it up, was running famously. While mowing, engine cut out. Tried to restart, got NOTHING.

What I've done to diagnose issue:

  • I have recharged and load tested the battery. It's good;
  • cleaned and lubed with Gibbs oil all electrical connections;
  • checked fuses -- all good;
  • replaced ignition switch with brand new Stens part;
  • traced 12 volts coming from the positive terminal of the battery. I have 12 volts coming to the relay that connects main power to the electric lift and the ignition switch; I have no juice coming out of the relay -- see picture:
  • IMG_7622.jpg.e99acf77fd28ddb3fdc10da4b2cded17.jpg

That is a new relay; I thought it was the issue. If I remove the relay and jump the connections, I get power -- all accessories and fuel pump engage when key is in R position. There's just no way I believe I got a bad relay, or even that the original is toast.

My father thinks it might be the seat kill switch. Do those ever go bad? What am I missing?

Any of the indicator lights come on when the fault is present? That should point you to the failure if it is working.

Will not be the seat switch. It controls the ignition only.

Garry, thank you.

So -- it was a fuse; two, to be exact. My father and I downloaded the wiring diagram here, with the diagram for the electric lift that adds the relay.

The seat switch fuse (15A) and the accessory pink wire fuse (5A) were both blown.

Why the hell would that happen?

Hopefully my problems are solved (knocking on wood).

Fuses blow because of a short. Check your wires from the seat switch all the way to where they end. One is probably pinched.
