front axle material

A dumb question but would any of you know what type of steel WH used to make the front axles for the 400 series tractors?  I'm thinking 3/4" or 1" cold roll as they welded on the steering arms but perhaps it was something tougher.  I ask because I've got a strange idea for an axle mod but it might not be worth pursuing if it's something you'd have to harden.

Whoops, After Darb's response I realize that I meant the left and right L shaped spindle that has the tie rod arms and the front hubs.

I wasn't sure what you were referring to so I gave the answer I was confidant in. I think those are cold rolled steel but not hundred percent. I was thinking never seen one of the cast front ends broke sure it happens. I would think lot more need for the L part.

I do believe they are just cold rolled steel. They will bend and you can bend them back, if they were hardened they would just fail. 

 

Whatever your mod is, go for it!!

Front spindles are Cold Rolled Steel.The axle is cast iron.If you are planning to do any welding on the spindles,go for it

Thanks guys, it's a big help.  Once I flesh out the idea some more, I'll post about what I have in mind.
