Mystery stalling

Recommended Posts

I have a 300 with a hydraulic lift.  It stalls after running a while and I don't know the cause.  Here are the symptoms.  It starts easily although if it has been sitting for a month I need to use some starter fluid on the air cleaner.  Once it starts it runs well until it begins to miss, maybe after 30 minutes.  If I do nothing it stalls.  If I use about half choke and half throttle it will lI'imp along so I can get it back to my garage.  Sometimes after limping for a while I can cut back on the choke and it runs fine again for awhile.  I keep the gas cap loose and have taken it off, and that doesn't seem to do anything.  I'm wondering if the fuel filter needs to be cleaned perhaps because there is dirt in the gas tank and it gums up after a while, but that wouldn't explain why it sometimes will go back to running well.  I would think if it were the magneto, that would cut out completely and I wouldn't be able to limp home.

Any advise would be most welcome.

Stay well.

Try the simple things first. Check the engine fins, change the filters, clean the fuel lines or replace, and clean the carb. Adjust the carb after the cleaning. This covers a lot of the fuel issues other than the fuel pump.

My 552 did that occasionally.  I removed the carb, cleaned it out, and it was fine for a while.  Then it did it again.  Same thing.  I added a fuel filter and it's been fine since.  But if you can pull the choke out and it helps it, which was the case with mine as well, it is starving for fuel and you have to find out why.

Mine did that for a while.  I found the fuel strainer in the bottom of the gas tank, part of the fuel shutoff, was semi plugged with sawdust.  Sometimes fuel would get through, and sometimes not.

I scrapped the strainer and put an in line fuel filter in instead.  Figure it's better filtration, and I can see what's going on.

If you are using gas with ethanol STOP!  That junk will ruin the fuel system.  You can find a station that sells real gas here. https://www.pure-gas.org/

Drain the fuel tank, replace the fuel lines and filter, flush fresh gas through the fuel pump and rebuild the carburetor.
