Andy N. 2,417 #1 Posted July 12, 2020 This morning I had the honor of being able to pick up a Suburban 400 (at least that's what I believe it is). No data plate and the not original engine didn't run. Didn't matter to me, ever since I picked up a 551 for one of my buddy's a few years ago, I fell in love with the '60 & '61 series tractors. Luckily, this one was close to my house (40 minutes) and still available when I contacted him. The not original Briggs was in pretty rough shape so in order to quench my thirst to drive it before end of day, I decided to do a 3 hp, $110 Predator swap from HF. This engine fired right up and had no issue driving this tractor around. It's pretty fast in 3rd gear. Tractor still needs some work, but it felt great to get this 60 year old machine back out and running. And I love the duallies! wallfish 18,242 #2 Posted July 12, 2020 (edited) You're correct. That's a 400. Nice find! It's also possible it could be a 550 as they were the same tractor with different engines. Look around the toolbox for holes which could have mounted a solenoid Edited July 12, 2020 by wallfish
D_Mac 9,317 #3 Posted July 12, 2020 Sweeeeeeet !! I just picked up a Predator Engine for my Lambert project. Have not fired it up yet. I am hoping it works as well as that engine does on yours ! Nice pick up !
oliver2-44 10,781 #4 Posted July 12, 2020 @Andy N. Nice looking original WH Suburban. The rusty plate between the original choke and throttle levers would have had the serial number lightly stamped on it. With the serial number you can roughly age it to being a Model 400 or a Model 550. I cleaned mine with Evaporust, polished it some with rubbing compound, then took a picture with my phone so I could enlarge it and actually was able to make out the number. 2
oldlineman 1,541 #5 Posted July 12, 2020 Very nice tractor, I also like the look of the dual-lies. looks like refueling may be a challenge though.

It is, but you can just get the gas cap off. Didn't want to cut the hood, but may try to raise it a little bit.
AMC RULES 37,211 #7 Posted July 12, 2020 Maybe just elongate the tanks mounting holes and slide it back a bit to aid in refueling.

wallfish 18,242 #10 Posted July 12, 2020 Or find a K91 and keep it old school. Is it possible to remove the tank from the engine and use the remote tank on the hood?
