227-5 starting problems

Recommended Posts

Hi forum from Devon in England,

I have had this 227-5 for about 6 years and ever since I got it it's had an intermittent starting problem. When cold or after winter storage the starter won't crank. testing with a multimeter shows that voltage is not getting to the starter when the key is turned. However when hot it just turns over and fires up fine....well it used to! Now the problem is permanent. I have a good battery, I have checked the battery cables and all the grounds, the starter has been bench tested and I have a new solenoid....still no good. So any advise on where to check next would be most appreciated. I had a look around on the internet already some common suspects are the ignition switch itself, the PTO switch and the seat switch. Just wondering if there are any others switches or issues to look for. I don't have a manual. I did find an electrical troubleshooting document called the demystification guide posted here but weirdly it did not include my model even though it covers models from 1985-2001. Mine is from 1988.

the one thing that sticks in my mind is that if I could get it going and run it for a while, it subsequently started ok while the engine was warm. The next day there would be problems again. I don't know if that is significant or not.

any help or thoughts most welcome. The grass is growing and I will soon need a scythe! Also if I need switches or other parts any steer on where to get em would be grand. Preferably UK based but I can import if needs be.

many thanks

james.

Added a color version that may help. Started out with a poor copy so the end result is not pretty.

I'm thinking the only difference will be the naming of the clutch pedal switch and the neutral switch for the automatic model.

Ignition switch > pto switch > seat switch control ignition.

Ignition switch > pto switch > clutch pedal switch control the starter
