Newman38 12 #1 Posted July 6, 2020 Good morning, Hope everyone had a fun safe Independence Day Week End. Finally got my son's deck welded up and put on the tractor with new wheels and blades that we torqued at 60 ft/lbs. Greased bearings until it came out of the notchbin thebzerk fitting. Tightened mower drive belt so that when squeezed with fingers lightly it moved in about 1" ( I think that's correct ?? ). After we engaged the PTO though it was making a loud grinding sound though. My son says dad that's normal it will not sound like that once we are cutting 🤔. He is really itching to cut with this tractor as I am for him. I showed a video to my small engines mechanic who has been a huge help along with you guys on this forum and he said sounds like the bearings, asked me if there was any play in the pulleys or blades and I said no. He then said the bearings could be pitted so bad that they can make this noise also. After taking spindles off and getting them apart and cleaned everything looks good as far as shaft not being bent or any rough gouged etc.. I know have new bearings and seals being ordered. Other than any other guidance/wisdom that could be offered I am not sure on specifics of the reassemble. Are there torque specs for pulley nut or the nut that rests underneath the spindle cup? Any particular reassembly order. Thanks so much for any help or advice that can be given. 20200628_203039_1.mp4
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,260 #2 Posted July 6, 2020 Click on the picture. On the next page are pages from the Spindle ID manual showing parts breakdown and possibly torque specs. The original spindle assembly and the replacments are also there. If the pulley is retained by a locknut you can eliminate the key and use a regular lock washer and plain nut. Load the spindle and pulley up with Neverseize so it is easier to remove next time. Garry
Newman38 12 #3 Posted July 6, 2020 Thanks alot Garry. That will be nice to eliminate the key. Can be pretty tricky to assemble with it from what I hear. I guess my main issue is now that things are clean the larger diameter nut that was stuck on the shaft ( the one that sits next to the spindle cup ) is now turning and on one shaft threaded all the way off. When put back together should this nut be placed at it's highest point on the threads aginst cup before torque down of pulley nut. Also do the knotches on the spacer seal that sits in the double lip seal go up or down. Didnt pay close enough attention 😐. Thanks again
SylvanLakeWH 27,616 #4 Posted July 6, 2020 Nice looking C 105! I have two C 105's - one pretty much stock and one rat rod... Love the Black Hoods! My side discharge deck is very quiet. Tell your son that is definitely not "normal"...! I have never taken spindles apart but folks here have so you should get plenty of guidance. Good luck! Newman38 12 #5 Posted July 6, 2020 Thanks, It is a very nice tractor. I believe it sat in storage for a long time. Also after taking spindles apart and cleaning that the grease was pretty old and gunky with some thicker spots. They may have just needed cleaned out and regreased as some on this forum have said, but since they are apart I figure I may as well replace the bearings and seal. This fall will be getting the plow situated. It looks a little intimidating. This guy has strings and stuff tied here and there.
