BrianX128 109 #1 Posted June 22, 2020 I have an old PTO from my KT17, but it looks like the bearing setup is different than a regular K series or magnum engine, is there anyway to adapt the bearing setup from the KT engine to work on a K series? Someone local to me has a 12hp K series with no PTO, I'd like to buy it as the price is really good and the engine looks in great shape, but it has no PTO and I don't see a way to make this work as it seems like it's designed for a smaller shaft or a different bearing setup or something. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,482 #2 Posted June 22, 2020 I'm thinking they should be the same. The only difference I am aware of is the 8hp Kohlers and a few early 10hp K=Series used a 1" crankshaft + the B&S models and the difference was made up in the inner race for the large needle bearing. Compare them https://www.partstree.com/models/31-17k801-417-8-toro-garden-tractor-1985/pto-clutch-and-control-16/ https://www.partstree.com/models/21-12k802-312-8-toro-garden-tractor-1986/pto-clutch-and-control-20/ The outside hardware like the hoop or how it mounts may be different. BrianX128 109 #3 Posted June 22, 2020 I'll have to take a picture of the PTO when I get home, but I swear the #40 for the KT engine doesn't exist on mine and the shaft is smaller. I wonder if it wasn't a KT17 originally for a wheel horse and it was swapped onto the wheel horse and someone "made" a pto bearing for it.
pfrederi 18,670 #4 Posted June 22, 2020 The PTO hoop uses the engine mounting plate for the bottom end. Older rigid mount C series used a small L bolted to the frame. The hoops are different lengths....
BrianX128 109 #5 Posted June 22, 2020 (edited) My fault, the bearing race was stuck in the pto pulley when it came off. I've always had it stick on the crank, I was able pull it out of the pto pulley easy and verify everything is the same. Clutch is kinda garbage but that's another days problem. Now I have everything for this other motor except an engine pulley. I got one set screw out of the 5 1/4 pulley on the kt17, the one that is holding the key on the shaft won't budge after a lot of heat and PB blaster.. I drilled the key out of the keyway as I can just cut another easy and try and get the set screw out or drill it and re tap a new one, but I still can't get this pulley to budge. I have a puller with 3 holes that will line up I've used for flywheels but I don't have any bolts long enough for it and the hardware store closes at 6 now. Any other tricks I can try to remove this thing? Edited June 22, 2020 by BrianX128
BrianX128 109 #6 Posted June 23, 2020 Well my pulley cracked in half. I used a flat piece of steel, drilled 4 holes to match the pulley and got grade 8 bolts and made my own "puller" for it against the shaft and the pulley came off but it had a small bend with a huge stress crack and it's ruined. I dropped it on the cement knowing it was already toast and it snapped in two pieces. Engine I was looking at buying doesn't have the pulley so I guess it's off to ebay or somewhere to buy one. Unreal. Trying to piece together spare parts to repower this old frame has been 500 times more irritating then repowering both of my other wheel horses ever was. I've about had it and I don't even have an engine yet, and I've already wasted more money on accessories and tools fixing other parts of it than I did on both of the other ones combined. Seems like this thing is cursed.
