Recommended Posts

redone

Ok. I am back. I purchase two new coils, a year ago. I started one motor today, got one pop, and then it died. Both coils are dead.

Yep China junk. But were can I buy two good coils. And not Napa. They wanted 250.00 plus shipping. Special order no refund. Not!

Thanks for your help

Bill

Hmmmm, thats a shame, I had good luck with an import - in fact its still going now some 2 yrs.

You may have seen posts or heard that some models of Harleys will work, and, here again I used one of those I pickled up at a flea mkt for $5 and it worked fine.

Do a search on the bay for 'harley coil' and see what you think. I just gave a quick looksee and there are several that look like they would work.

A bit strange that it would just blow a new coil like that. Are you sure everything is wired right? I have also used the cheap ones without any problems at all.

Those twin tower coils look nice and keep it tidy, but since both cylinders are firing at the same time, one on power stroke the other on exhaust so the spark does nothing.

You could pigtail a single tower coil and have both hot wires connected to spark plugs or you could use two coils as shown below, the animation shows spark occurs at both plugs at the same time.

Some starter solenoids have an "S" terminal used to supply a full 12 volts to the coil during start, for this configuration a non resistor coil is preferred with a ballast resistor place inline to reduce the voltage to the coil once the engine is running.

Most modern coils today have an internal ballast.

$ 125.00 for a coil ? I have a C- 175 from 1985. Is it possible to convert it to all electronic ignition and eliminate the coil all together ?

Easier and cheaper to get a Harley davidson coil.  About 35$
