BrianX128 107 #1 Posted June 11, 2020 (edited) I have a thread in the engine area about the KT17 dying, but at this point basically all of my questions are electrical so I figured I'd make a new topic about them here. I got a C161 last night, super nice 16 horse engine doesn't smoke, and it started super easy on a half dead battery so compression appears to be healthy. I got the whole rest of that tractor as well, but it's a manual and the wife likes her hydro. I'm wondering what all I'm going to run into electrically to get the charging system working and make sure my ignition components work properly, both are battery ignition but the C161 has that fin rectifier mounted under the battery and the KT had the voltage regulator on the engine. I see two wires coming from the stator on the K series, just not sure how I'm going to hook things together as the 417A had a black plug with two wires going to the engine on a connecting "clip" and that's really all that went to the engine. I'm guessing I can leave the ignition switch as is, I just want to make sure I don't backfeed the charging system into something incorrectly from that thing under the battery, and I'm not really sure where those wires on the "clip" thing from the 417a are coming from. pfrederi 18,566 #2 Posted June 11, 2020 You will have to move the fin regulator to your auto tractor. There should be three wires coming from your k341 engine. Two will be white they will go to the AC terminals on the regulator. The B terminal on the finned regulatror you hook up to the ignition switch .
BrianX128 107 #3 Posted June 11, 2020 The third wire would coming from the positive side of the coil as well correct? I'm confused why there are so many terminals looking at the ignition switch on the 417a, shouldn't there just need to be one for the starter, one for accessory, and one for everything else that is hooked to the positive battery (coil, output from charging system) and one straight to the positive battery? pfrederi 18,566 #4 Posted June 11, 2020 Third wire on the K341 goes to + coil and the "I" terminal on the switch. All C series and later used 5 pole switches (some maybe 6.)
BrianX128 107 #5 Posted June 11, 2020 Ok cool. I guess my main challenge is going to be figuring out what the wires in the black connector actually are from the 417a. I'm guessing one was the charge wire from the voltage regulator and one was the coil wire both heading to the ignition. I'm wondering if it matters which one is which. I think all the wiring is hacked beyond recognition.
pfrederi 18,566 #6 Posted June 11, 2020 I think you need to forget about the KT 17 wires. You are going to setup a new system on your 417 adding the finned regulator from the C-161. Two white wires from the 16hp engne go to it. One wire from it to your ignition switch "R" The third colored wire from your 16hp goes to the "I" terminal Nothing else changes on the
BrianX128 107 #7 Posted June 12, 2020 I think I figured out why the previous owner hacked the wiring some, the "R" terminal on the ignition switch is dead. I'm guessing since it gets linked anyways on the same key positions it won't hurt me to link the output from the rectifier to the same wire as the positive going to the coil since I'm short a terminal? Once I have the charge wire, my electrical of the swap is solved. Just need to get a longer throttle cable, and a shorter belt since the engine drive pulley is a 4" and not a 5 1/4 pulley. Hopefully an 80" belt verses an 81.5 will even out since I can't get the old pulley off the KT17. Once I do that, I'm basically done. Just gotta put the PTO back on and slide the deck back under. pfrederi 18,566 #8 Posted June 12, 2020 The "I" termnal is connected during cranking the "R" is not. I would piggy back to the "ACC" It has same connections as "R"
