bo dawg 517 #1 Posted May 6, 2009 I finally had the chance to get to the Charger 10 I brought home last week. I wanted to see if that Tecumseh was good or not. Hooked a battery up to it, shot a little quick start in the carb and turned it over. It tryed to run but seemed like carb not getting gas. So I pulled the line off... plenty of gas there, so I took the bowl off... it had some crud in it...cleaned it out...checked the jet...clear...float was good and working right. Put back together reset the screw adjuster in the bottom for gas flow. Shot some more quick start in it turned key and it started running. Little adjusting on the set screws and that baby runs and sounds really good, idles like a kitten purrs I am impressed with it, its quieter and smoother running than the Kolhers (it seems like ) but haven't had a test drive yet I'm working on that tonight. I never had one of these engines, always told not to get one.
rickv1957 74 #2 Posted May 6, 2009 The older Tecumseh 10hp and 12hp are good reliable old engines,as I have a couple,Wheelhorse used these as needed when Kohlers were not available or could not keep up with demand,Rick
Red Horse 33 #3 Posted May 7, 2009 bo, Tecumsehs get a bit of a bad rap. Some of which is justified. The trouble with them is that are finicky about being adjusted just right or they will give you fits trying to start one up. When they are right they are like gold. Also when you do have then adjusted right LEAVE THEM ALONE. they don't like tinkering. They are not too forgiving. They're stronger than a comperable B&S but B$S would be more reliable on starting up than a Tecumseh would. I believe the last Tecumseh WH ordered was about 1975 so even WH finally threw in the towel with them. Too many complaints from dealers and customers. It's really too bad because if you do have one that really runs good they are really good machines. They just have tighter specs in which they will operate. I remember having one on an old 67 Lawn Ranger that ran like a champ and I guess thinking back on it that machine must have cut hundreds od acres of grass with no trouble. Coadster32 793 #4 Posted May 7, 2009 I seem to have pretty good luck with the techyy motors myself. Although they're not really popular around here.
