hotajax 226 #1 Posted May 26, 2020 Good morning, gents: I have 314-H. Starter acting like it's on its way down. I can get a factory OEM starter for $300 Last time I looked, or maybe get an aftermarket. I tried to get an aftermarket a few years ago, and it didn't fit. I could hear teeth banging. Vendor did take it back. So my question to you is this. Have any of you purchased an aftermarket starter that worked? Do you remember who you bought it from? Just because the ebay ad says it is for your tractor, it doesn't guarantee it will fit. Thanks in advance. Hot Ajax

lynnmor 7,822 #4 Posted May 26, 2020 If possible, get a good used one, the aftermarket starters and many that Toro claims to be OEM are imported junk.

That's what I was going to say. I'd much rather install a known good used unit from somebody like A to Z tractors then to put on a cheap imitation. Is yours rebuildable?

For new aftermarket or OEM check with these guys. http://www.psep.biz/store/kohler_starter_motors.htm You must know if you have a 10 or a 13 tooth sprocket on your original starter.
953 nut 60,027 #7 Posted May 26, 2020 Be sure the starter you buy has the same number of teeth on the Bendix drive as yours. There are a couple different ones depending on the engine size. An automotive starter repair shop should be able to repair yous or get a good used one. The after market junk isn't worth the money.

However, when I go to the local guy ( younger guy who seems to have no appreciation for quality made "old" products ) who fixes starters and generators ( remember when real cars used to have a generator? ) he won't fix it. He tries to set me up with some aftermarket crap. Edited May 28, 2020 by hotajax Add text

Pop the starter off and see if it's an obvious issue. Then order a starter kit as needed.
hotajax 226 #10 Posted May 28, 2020 (edited) I have a question, I'm sure one of guys would know. When I look at the pics of starters on the 'net, they all have this pretty shiny black shaft. Is this a cover over the shaft that is removed prior to installation? Thanks in advance. Hot Ajax PS: When determining whether the drive is clockwise or counter-clockwise, which end of the starter is closest to your nose? Hot Ajax PS: When determining whether the drive is clockwise or counter-clockwise, which end of the starter is closest to your nose? The shiny black shaft is a cover over the Bendix spring. No need to remove it prior to installation, the only reason to remove it would be to replace the Bendix drive. Clock wise or Counter clock wise direction should only be a concern when purchasing a starter/generator. Bendix drive starters should all rotate the same way.
