WHNJ701 4,165 #1 Posted May 25, 2020 does anyone know the proper steps and parts needed to convert an early briggs coil over. these are the pre 1964, with the 3 leg coil, 4 bolt. the engines are the 5 3/4 hp aluminum block 143000 series. the flywheel has the 2 magnets which I don't think works with the newer coils
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,394 #2 Posted May 25, 2020 That is correct they won't work. Even the small Atom modules they advertise as the be all end all won't work with multiple magnets. I think a new replacement coil will fix your problem. Insulation in the newer product is far superior to what they had years ago. Garry
WHNJ701 4,165 #3 Posted May 25, 2020 would switching to a newer style flywheel work then?
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,394 #4 Posted May 26, 2020 Have never tried it but that is a possibility. Garry
WHNJ701 4,165 #5 Posted May 26, 2020 unless I am missing something these type coils are very hard to find anymore. I was you can fit a tecumseh coil onto the armature
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,394 #6 Posted May 26, 2020 Used a few of these with good luck but don't know if it is the one you need. Would need the engine numbers to check. https://www.bantasaw.com/catalog/viewproduct.asp?i=1144&p=1381 Garry

WHNJ701 4,165 #8 Posted May 27, 2020 those replacement coils are too big, I ordered a 1 magnet flywheel and corresponding coil for post 1964 briggs engine. hopefully this will work
WHNJ701 4,165 #9 Posted June 7, 2020 I have the engine running great now, figured out changing to newer style coil with the corresponding flywheel single magnet worked. it was good up grade best this engine has ever run. now to decide whether to upgrade the other 7 engines on tractors to this setup
