Harris1453 1 #1 Posted May 21, 2020 Hello, I know there have been some threads similar to this but i think i have a slight twist that justifies a new topic, if not just let me know. I have a D160 that has ready been repowered with a kohler KT17 engine that just crapped the bed on me l Yesterday. Totally lost compression on one cylinder 🤬. So my question is, now that its already set up for this motor what other engines would fit without much craziness lol. Would a M18? Looking for any suggestions or input and thanks in advance!!! pfrederi 18,670 #2 Posted May 21, 2020 M18 is a good engine same basic block as a KT17 so should fit easily. However you will have to get a new ignition switch as Magnums are magneto ignition. Your existing ignition switch will fry the Magnum's magneto
Harris1453 1 #3 Posted May 21, 2020 That makes sense! Is there a good resource for looking up what all machines used a particular motor?
pacer 3,177 #4 Posted May 21, 2020 Since none of the D's came with a KT17 and did come with an Onan and the 16 hp K341, these of course will fit. Since several other models of the K series motors are the same bolt pattern then there are more options there.
pfrederi 18,670 #5 Posted May 21, 2020 Some more thoughts...Do you have an electric PTO (used on the Onan D series) or a manual one. If it was a manual one the KT 17 should have had a thrust bearing. What spec number was it. If it is a manual PTO you will have to find a Magnum with a thrust bearing. If electric any one will do assuming cankshaft length is OK. You need to look at the Kohler engine web site . you can look up all the companies Kohler made magnums for. then you have to look at the spec number parts explosion and see if it had a thrust bearing.. (if you had a manual PTO. http://www.kohlerenginesparts.com/PartStream/Index
