Jaydubz83 22 #1 Posted May 17, 2020 Cleaned up the deck and did some mowing today. Decided it wasn't enough seat time for me so I took a little joyride on the piece of property next to me and ran out of gas like a dingus. I filled the tank, popped off the inlet fuel line to make sure there wasn't a block in the line. Popped off the air cleaner and sprayed some starter fluid into the carb and got it to fire but it wouldn't stay running. Let it set for about an hr and went back to it to no avail. Now it seems there is no power going to the mower (no lights, test panel button not illuminating). Checked connections and all seems to be working including the fuse. I need some other ideas. Gonna rent a truck to get it out of the field tomorrow and back home but figured I'd give y'all some time to get a chuckle out of my noob badge of honor and once done laughing, perhaps point me in the right direction to resuscitate Ol' Ruby back to life TYIA

Jaydubz83 22 #3 Posted May 17, 2020 That'd probably help...... '94 416-8 w the onan p216G
lynnmor 7,817 #4 Posted May 17, 2020 I guess you have the 416-8. Did you check the white 9 pin connector? Is the battery dead? Are the fuses good? Can you check for power at the ignition switch? Was that the inlet line to the fuel pump and did you hold it down and watch the fuel flow?

Battery shouldn't be dead its fairly new. Yes the fuel flowed fine into a can I brought w me. Doesn't seem to be getting fuel at all from the pump foward as the filter doesnt seem to have fuel running through it. . Would running the tank dry fry the fuel pump? No, the pump will tolerate running dry. Air in the fuel filter is normal even though it doesn't make sense. The pump may be bad or the pulse line out the back could be broken. Since you lost power while it set, is something draining the battery? Can you try jump starting it?
Jaydubz83 22 #7 Posted May 17, 2020 Got a charger (harbor freight special) I'll hook it up when I get it back home and see. The odd things is even if it had power, the engine wouldn't turn over unless starter fluid was used and it wouldnt stay running unless there was a constant shot of fluid shot in the carb
lynnmor 7,817 #8 Posted May 17, 2020 The term "turn over" I use to say the engine is going around. If it is turning and not firing unless fuel (starter fluid) is added, says to me you have a carburetor problem. Check the fuel flow from the fuel line at the carb. Be careful with this, move the fuel line away and into a can.
Darb1964 1,119 #9 Posted May 17, 2020 Don't run it on starter fluid very long or use it regularly for starting or trouble shooting. It's not getting fuel, probably sucked some dirt in when you ran it out of fuel. Good time to clean the fuel tank and fuel lines and filter. Starter fluid is very corrosive, I would add some marvel mystery oil to your gas tank when you refuel, a shot in the carb would be good also, the cylinders are dry, will smoke for a while but that's a good thing. wfrpalm 218 #10 Posted May 17, 2020 Try taking the fuel line off at the pump and suck the gas through the line before you attach it again. I use a big syringe to do this when my tractor is not getting fuel.
Jaydubz83 22 #11 Posted May 17, 2020 Reckon I found the electrical issue..... It was late and the lighting sucked last night so I didn't catch this Looking at a wiring diagram seems to show this (the 25A) fuse being linked to the starter and panel circuitry (if I'm sayin this correctly) So it would seem cranking the h-e-double hockey sticks outta Ol Ruby may have caused this fuse to blow maybe? I had to order some because this morning I blew a brake hose on my car and none of the 7 (yes 7) local NAPAs, VIPs, AutoZones, Pepboys and Advanced Auto stores had the hose I ACTUALLY need replaced (doing all 4 w the if one is shot the others are not far behind it mentality) This just ain't my weekend 😖😣 Stay tuned for more updates upon receipt of parts etc etc. I do wanna give a shout out to all the folks who threw baseline troubleshooting ideas my way. This NOOB really appreciates your expertise 👍👍 Joe
