867 Not charging

Old 867

Long story short , I recently got an 867 and got her running , deck on it and working using tractor supply . Cuts great but have to make sure the battery is fully charged before I start. I've looked quick at her , noticed a positive ground ( I thought they were neg grnd) but what I need is a wiring diagram.

Manual and wiring diagram for your tractor here.  Welcom

Should be negative ground but who know who changed what over 50 years.

Welcome to the forum.

This Kohler manual has a good section on the starter/generator.

Click on the picture to see what section to download.

Nice looking tractor and one of my favorites ...appears to be all original:handgestures-thumbupright:

Parts will be no problem & let us know if you need help finding them. Most like the regulator but check your battery condition and all connections and grounds.

Appreciate it . She is all original , except deck drive belt and pedal spring( tractor supply) . My girlfriend rolled her eyes when I brought her home lol until I mowed the lawn. Honestly I'd rather put some money into 50yrs old rather than buying new with quality not being what it was ( my opinion ) . Also , I guess u can take the boy out of Pennsylvania but u can't take Pennsylvania out of the boy

The positve ground maybe the issue issue for your charging system.  You can test your regulator.  Hook up your multimeter to the battery.  12.6 is fully charged.  Running voltage should be higher maybe 14.  If not run a jumper wire from the F terminal of the regulator to  a good ground.  You should hear the engine work a bit harder and Voltage should go up.

I will definitely test the regulator and follow the diagrams that I've downloaded to see how it should be wired

When you go back to negative ground make sure you reverse the wires on the coil.  (assuming who ever did the switch to POS did it correctly.)  Couple of my old farm tractors are POS ground and I have messed that up before.  You S/G will polarize it self the frost time you try to crank it....

First , I should have introduced myself I'm Chip and thanks guys for the help and access to manuals. I would have updated sooner but the boss always has a list for the weekends . I printed the wiring diagram and traced the system. Fortunately it was just as simple as the guy before hooked up the battery backwards . I switched the cables and ran her for about 5 min and got to 13v . I'll charge the battery separately and I'll recheck the charging system as I run her

nice Rig.

sounds you‘re on the right Way.

13V can be happen in idle if battery is not precharged and Voltage level  is below 12,5-12,2Volts without any load

and charging system must deliver huge charging Current

depending on battery age and battery status.

If engine raises rpm the charging Voltage will increase to 13,4-13,6 Volts.

Clamp Ammeter if available in DC is your Friend at this point.

Charging current will depending on charging coil and regulator up to 15A, what is for a cheap Ammeter too much.

I preferr the Clamp Ammeters because of contactless Current measurement.

Even if a measured current is too high, you don‘t can destroy it.

What Voltage you reading before Start on unloaded Battery?
