how to set engine speed

Hi all just a question that I should know the answer too after owning these things over 40 years but never had to do. 31-12ke01, 1990 312 H 12 Hp Kohler Magnum , how do you adjust the engine speed. Being a hydro the RPM's should still be 3600 right? Never had to do this but what is the procedure too adjust the RPM's. Do you just slide the cable in its clamp to pull more, thanks to any and all who respond. Bob

Never done it either.

Are there not belcranks mounted to the front of the blower housing below the air filter for both the choke and throttle cables?

Think I remember seeing an adjustment screw there to limit the travel of the cable.

On the older style I get the engine running at the desired rpm and bring the stop up to the cable. Then lower rpm, bring it back up to max and see how close I got. I might go 3550 max because they are not new any more.

I use a digital tach.

Sliding the cable through the clamp is how I do it. Set the throttle lever to full and adjust the engine speed to 3600 rpm and lock the clamp. Then throttle down to make sure it can idle. Using a tach to measure rpm is the best way. Search the net for a small engine tach, they're not very expensive.

Yes, Garry there are belcranks for the throttle and choke, I will try sliding the cable a little and see what happens. Wallfish I have a tach, not sure how accurate it is made you know where, the type you wrap a wire around the plug wire several times and get an RPM reading. I used it on my 1989 414-8 and it showed around 3500 figured that was close enough for a 30 year old engine, like Garry said there not new anymore! Thank you guys for sharing your knowledge.
