Lake Delhi 2 #1 Posted May 4, 2020 (edited) I have a 16HP Kohler K341S in my C160. After about an hour the engine back fires a bit then it quits. I have a wait a while for the engine to cool down then it will run again. I thought the coil was getting hot and opening up so I replaced it with an after market coil and it still quits. I was wonder what it could be? Maybe the condenser, amp meter, or ignition switch? Thanks, Tyler Edited May 4, 2020 by Lake Delhi
oliver2-44 10,716 #2 Posted May 4, 2020 Did it run good before and just start doing this, or is this a problem it's had since you recently got it? Run it, and when it quits check if you have spark at the plug. Then verify you have fuel going to the carburator. Check that the gas cap vent is open. Cleaning and (gently) tightening all the electrical connections is always a good baseline to start with as a process of elimination.
953 nut 60,008 #3 Posted May 4, 2020 (edited) The gas cap vent was the first thing that came to mind for me. If the vent isn't allowing air into the tank there will be a slight vacuum developed as gas leaves the tank and eventually the fuel pump won't be able to overcome it. pacer 3,177 #4 Posted May 4, 2020 The 2 main things to do is figure if it fuel or spark --- get another plug and have it in your pocket, then have some means of squirting fuel into the carb throat (might take the filter off temporarily) (I like the brake cleaners that are flammable) When it quits take the extra plug and connect it and lay it on top pf the engine somewhere it touches metal, crank it over and see if it sparks. If it does, then squirt some 'fuel' in the carb throat, it it tries to start then --- well, you have eliminated 1 of the main things that will cause this. If no spark then go to points condensor, wiring etc, if fuel then find out why, fuel pump, clogged lines, carb clogged up (ethanol fuel??)
Lee1977 7,208 #5 Posted May 10, 2020 (edited) If you filled the gas tank before you started it could be the fuel pump. I had that with my C-120 don't remember how long it would run with a full tank before it quit. Then after about 20 minuets it would start back up and run. That was back when you could get the fuel pump kit from Wheel Horse. The pump is now on my 312-8. Edited May 10, 2020 by Lee1977
