Briggs 18 hp starter

I have a GT 1800, 1848 with a Briggs and Stratton 18 hp. I just had the seat, fenders etc to adjust the hydro shifter, it wouldn't go to the neutral position when I applied the brakes. I fixed that problem and put it back together. I tried to start it and nothing, I realized that I probably didn't get the safety switch wires put on properly. Took the shift lever plate back off and somehow got the wires of the safety switch back on correct. Parking brake on to start the tractor and now the starter spins but won't engage to turn the engine over. It started fine a couple days ago.

I'm stumped now. I guess I put the safety switch wires on correctly but now starter not engaging. Is there any connection between the switch and starter is the starter/solenoid shot? If it is the starter, can someone let me know a part number to find another one?

In the manual, the engine is model 422437 type 0663-01

 Any help is greatly appreciated.

A common issue with Briggs starters is that the plastic drive gear on the starter will strip out. This is the gear that I'm talking about and a source for them.

Pull your starter off & check the condition of the gear.

If the starter is spinning full speed, it's almost surely the gear has jammed or sheared as said above.
Kind of a notorious issue. I converted my 1848 to a Kohler due to it having many problems.
