312-8 power loss

Recommended Posts

Ol Red

Hey guys,

I just threw the rear discharge deck on my 312-8 and it’s the first season I’ll be using for mowing. I ran a plow on it through the winter and have used it for pulling a heavy dump trailer with no issues.

I just tried mowing with it the other day and was able to get through mowing the grass but barely. When in gear without the PTO engaged the motor runs strong. If the mower is in neutral with the PTO engaged it also seems to run fine. When I’m driving and have the PTO engaged it started off strong but begins to lose power and sounds like it’s starting to bog down. He bearings on the deck are good and the mule drive is greased and turns freely. Could it be that the belt is too tight, and putting under stress? It also seems that after a certain amount of time mowing it will disengage the PTO lever on its own. Maybe the PTO lever needs to be adjusted so it’s not so tight/ putting so much pressure on the PTO?

I am new to these machines so any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

If the PTO or a belt is slipping, it will act like the engine is low in power.  If these things are working correctly, then check the air filter.  Plows and trailers don't take near the horsepower as a mower in high grass.

Also remember that this machine has 12HP so do not expect it to do what a 20HP twin would.

12HP will drive the tractor and deck in light grass but in heavy grass you may need to gear down for the engine to keep up.

Just my thoughts, Cleat

ol red , i agree with others above , that pto trunnion has a " sweet spot " that will engage it easily , and it will hold that setting , i am thinking back it off a turn or two , try it back and forth till it holds and works. the other insight is to lower your gearing , low range /high gear ,or lower for really thick stuff . leaving high range ,1 or 2 for easier flat  cutting . you might also drop your deck and check out the build up , that will all but stop discharge , let us know how you make out , pete
