My 1978 C-161 starter seized up today. Any advice to where the best place to order one is? I saw one on jacks small engine repair for like 230.00.  It's an American Bosch 1635323m030sm. Thanks in advance, John

Update, I did order one from A-Z today. Thanks for all the advice,John

I've often wondered if the new Ebay starters are any good. Never tried one for a K series engine.
Best bet of course is to rebuild the original or replace with a good old Bosch or AC Delco motor.

A friend bought a cheap overseas starter on :techie-ebay: a couple years back. It only weighed about  half as much as the Kohler starter and it didn't last more than a year. At my suggestion he bought a used starter from Lincoln at A-Z Tractor https://a-ztractor.com/ which cost about the same as the cheap junk one.

I installed my new starter today and it fired right up. I took the original bosh apart to find that one of the magnets had come unglued for the starter cylinder and had exploded inside the starter.

If not too much other damage was done that may be rebuildable.
