kasey54 305 #1 Posted April 27, 2020 I have an old k181 I'm checking to see if serviceable. It needs a carb ,coil and some gov. parts and linkage. The shaft doesn't turn, though it does slide in and out a little bit. Advise appreciated before I make any drastic moves.

wallfish 18,108 #3 Posted April 27, 2020 that gov shaft should turn back and forth but not all the way around. Maybe 1/4 of a turn or a little less
kasey54 305 #4 Posted April 27, 2020 Any idea why it wouldn't ?
WHX?? 51,763 #5 Posted April 27, 2020 The fly arms could be stuck in the outward position but it's hard to imagine that could happen. Any idea what the internal condition of the motor is like? Also check the philips head screw right next to the shaft. It holds the gov gear from sliding off. If that it missing it could cause a problem. Any 181 is serviceable in my book as long as the block is not ventilated.
adsm08 3,259 #6 Posted April 27, 2020 K181 is a hardy engine to be sure. Mine got pulled out of a 10 year hibernation and fired right up with little more than a fresh battery and fuel. The governor isn't hard to work on or set, even though it should never really be needed. If the governor arm won't move at all you can try loosening the nut and seeing if that helps. Mine was a little stiff at first. Some adjustment and some lubing helped a lot.
