Goldnboy 1,027 #1 Posted April 26, 2020 I am in the last phases of redoing a GT1848 with a K301 and while waiting on primer to dry started on electrical which is a start all from scratch setup. I have use the C160 wiring diagram with wires color coordinated. And put in a weak battery showing 10 Volts but thought the starter would crank at least but nothing happened. I am thinking that when I painted the donor engine block, that I painted over the starter mount area. Will that cause a bad ground? Also there is paint under the bolts where the solenoid is mounted. I verified that I had volts past the amp meter , volts to the coil, and also to the rectifier, in the on position of the key. I had before installing the safety switches checked resistance before and they were fine. As a last resort I ran a jumper directly to solenoid from the key and no luck. Oh and they key switch I have is from my battery ignition test stand. For now I know I need to replace the battery but...starter should have turned over. Ideas before I start all over?

Why would you expect a bad battery and components with inadequate grounds to work. You have already told us what the problems are, correct them and I would bet the results will be better.
WHX?? 51,426 #3 Posted April 26, 2020 For starters, no pun intended, start out with a good battery. 10 volts might not even make the solenoid click. Probably not any CCA in a bad battery. As for the grounds yeah gotta scrap off paint under grounding fasteners. I use star washers here as well.

squonk 43,432 #6 Posted May 1, 2020 (edited) 10 volts may make a light bulb glow but it ain't gonna spin a 12 volt motor . And with a bad ground I bet the voltage dropped to near zero when you turned the key Edited May 1, 2020 by squonk
Goldnboy 1,027 #7 Posted May 2, 2020 I feel bad.. cleaned paint from engine block under starter and installed battery, turned the key and starter kicked over, and 12.5 V to coil... Now on to check my static engine timing... Thanks for the advice.
