Running out of gas

Recommended Posts

Oldskool

Well during the whole covid shutdown I ended up screwing around in the garage. Out of sheer boredom and built a toy. It has a Kohler 14hp vert shaft with a Walbro carb. I have over ridden the gov a bit. My issue is I seem to be running out of fuel on top end. It runs great at idle and normal operating rpms. Is there any way to get more fuel from my carb?  Maybe some of the puller guys have a trick?

I know a way to get lots of fuel to the carb.

You can put it in the fuel tank.

Seriously though, what's your delivery system? Gravity fed, pump fed, just submerged in the tank? If gravity fed you might consider adding a pump, if you have a pump maybe a higher flow pump. If you put it in the tank, lack of fuel supply probably isn't the issue.

Also make sure the lines aren't plugged and the flow not restricted anywhere. Clogged filter or sediment screen could do that.

@adsm08 Its gravity fed. All fuel lines are new with new filter and the tank and carb are clean. I'm only running out of fuel with a sustained speed of approx 30mph-ish. The engine isnt set up for a pump. Would I need to drill and tap the valve cover to get a pulse to run the pump?

No idea on that one. I was thinking some sort of small electric unit.

Electric? Never thought of electric. Something to look into for sure

That's what I was thinking too.

Low pressure, frame mount.

Neat toy !!!!

Thanks. Stock engine  and stock rear. Trying to get 40mph out of it lol. Had to do something while gathering up parts for the GT14

How'd you accomplish that?

I once saw a similar tractor with an added reducing jackshaft in the center and both engine/transmission pulleys were also changed.

Small V twin Briggs (16hp?) Peerless 5 speed.

That one would do a strong 30 mph.

Same idea. I went 1in bigger on the engine pulley to a jack shaft made from a mowing deck spindle with a 3.5in pulley on bottom and a 5in on top. Then changed out the 8in pulley on the 6 speed rear to a 2.5in. Added a foot throttle and dropped the rear of the mower 4in.

Let gravity drain the tank through a hose with the outlet at carb intake height.

That should give you a good idea of how fast it is flowing.

The longer it flows the slower it will get.

One of my biggest problems is, I'm not sure where I'm lacking on fuel. Weather it is delivery to the carb or from the carb to engine

Have you checked the vent in the gas cap? May function fine at idle low speeds but pucker up when stressed with higher speed vacuum?

Just a thought...

I started using hose I can see through. Blue purplish in color. Supposed to be good for 100% ethanol. Now I can see what's happening..

I've done that as well.

I see the governor is not in play anymore. Any idea what RPM you're turning?

I'm not by any means a small engine hot rod expert but if you're in the upper RPM for long periods of time it makes sense that a stock carb could prove difficult.

Ya bypassed the gov. I wish I had a tach for it but if I had to guess the rpm I would say a 1/3 more than stock.
